Established in 1954, the Department of Economics (DE), Patan Multiple Campus is one of the oldest departments of economics at Tribhuvan University in the country of Nepal. The department was one of the seven departments established in Patan Inter College. In 1959, it was upgraded and bigger after the constituent campus of Tribhuvan University. In 1990, the department run a Master of Level in economics. It was a historical achievement to make a wider academic vision, mission, and goal of the department. 

With highly qualified, competent, experienced, and well-known faculty members, the department largely conducts teaching and learning activities for 1000 students of M.A. Economics and 300 students of B.A. economics per the annual academic calendar, along with research activities, dissemination programs, and peer-reviewed journal publications. The department has been publishing the Economic Journal of Development Issues(EJDI), a bi-annual journal with a focus on economic and development issues continuously since 2000. It is available in Nepal NEPJOL.

The department is comprised of 13 faculty members team including one Professor, three Associate Professors, ten Lecturers, and two administrative staffs. Currently, four lecturers are doing Ph.D. in economics from Nepal and India, five faculty members hold Ph.D. from Nepal, India, and the UK and one faculty holds Post Doctor Degree under Sir Parthadas Gupta Post Doc Fellowship. The remaining faculty has an MPhil degree in economics. Only a few holds Master's Degree in economics. This academic strength is the strength of the department for academic excellence and problem-solving quality education.   This strength is performing well to produce gold medalist award receiving students by scoring at the topper in MA economics in Tribhuvan University in the last several years. This reputation makes popular this department one of the best leading departments in economics at Tribhuvan University and outside the University. Therefore, this department is the first choice of highly committed, professional, and career-oriented students at Tribhuvan University. Currently, more than 75 percent of students working in the central bank of Nepal, Nepal Rastra Bank, the Commercial Banks, and the government of Nepal have enrolled.  Besides, the academic backgrounds of students are divergent including management, engineering, agriculture, forestry, etc.

The department provides MA and BA economics programs in the morning. In MA economics, the department offers six specialized papers: International trade, Agricultural Economics, Managerial Economics, Econometrics, Applied Statistics, and Natural Resources, along with eight compulsory papers and thesis writing.  Similarly, in BA economics, the department offers four specialized papers, along with 12 compulsory papers. These programs are effective in the academic calendar of Tribhuvan University.
